In order to understand and enjoy Mermaid Hunter, the soap opera, you need to know the historical background of its characters and thereby the basis for their behavior... remember, we are talking about Mermaids and Sea Sirens. And by the way, Mermaids and Sea Sirens are two completely different creatures. So, let's go back to the very beginning. The origin of Mermaids and Sea Sirens is Greek. But Greek Mythology according to Hollywood has it all wrong. Here is the Truth told to me by modern day Sea Sirens and Mermaids.

4000 years ago, six beautiful young women partied and seduced Zeus, king of all Greek gods. They had their way with him – and he loved it! Unfortunately, his wife Hera learned of his infidelity and as punishment banished the women to a desolate Greek island called Lesbos. There they would be devoid of human contact evermore. Hera contemptuously named these women Sirens.

Their fate sealed, they cried out to Poseidon, God of the Oceans, and pleaded for mercy. Poseidon told them they were naughty girls and he would not offend Hera by setting them free. But he did give them beautiful singing voices so they could lure sailors to their island. And, he also gave them superior water skills so they could better adapt to their stark island existence. The Sirens could now swim faster, further and deeper than any human. He also gave them a better understanding of the oceans and the marine life within.

Well, before you know it, life was good for the Sirens. Their irresistible singing lured sailors to the island who exchanged food and treasures for love and sex. Soon the island of Lesbos was full of love and life; just the opposite what Hera wanted. Hera was watching this transformation from Mount Olympus... and not liking it. Not liking it one bit!!! But Poseidon was a powerful Greek god and she knew she had to be careful if she was to change what was happening on Lesbos. So, she waited patiently for the right moment to strike back at the Sirens.

Meanwhile back on Lesbos, two Sirens came to love the ocean so much they asked Poseidon to give them fishtails so they could stay in the water forever and visit him in his underwater kingdom. He granted their wish and Mermaids were created. Poseidon was delighted with his new sea-creatures and held them in high regard. And since the ocean could be a hostile place for his new Mermaids he instructed dolphins to protect the Mermaids while underwater... and he commanded the Sirens to protect them when they surfaced or rested on the shoreline.

The Mermaids became so content and happy with their transformation they began not needing the affection of men or sex. Even Poseidon’s wife, Amphitrite, goddess of the Mediterranean Sea came to Lesbos to play and mingle with the Mermaids. As the population on Lesbos grew some Sirens envied the Mermaids and now wanted to become Mermaids too. So Poseidon developed a challenging test to make sure only those whose intentions were pure would survive the test and transform into Mermaids. All was good and the island flourished.

Many years passed before Hera was able to get her revenge. It happened when Poseidon was preoccupied in a vicious feud with Zeus. Acting swiftly and without mercy she created a plague/virus that killed every male on the island. She altered the 'insides' of the Sirens (DNA) so that only female babies could be born. And she cursed away the Sirens ability to love and cherish anyone but themselves. The effect was brutal. To Greek sailors the island of Lesbos was not what it used to be. The Sirens were now cold, unfeeling and had no sexual appeal. Even their singing had begun to loose its power to draw the sailors to the island.

NOTE: From here on - when speaking of MERMAIDS and SIRENS as a group the title of Si-Mers will be used.

But Hera wasn’t done yet. She wanted to turn the Si-Mers into creatures the world would fear and turn against. Hera knew she had to be very clever about it so that even Poseidon would be duped.  Her plan was ingenious.

Playing off the Si-Mer’s enhanced breath holding ability; a gift given to them by Poseidon, Hera instilled in their minds an overpowering concept: That breathing and breath holding would now be sacrosanct. Now the simple act of breathing was to be revered and glorified. In their minds breath was the ultimate life-force to celebrate; and sharing breath, sharing your life-force with each other was the ultimate gift of oneself to your fellow Si-Mers.

And so it came to pass… the Si-Mers began to exchange breath and life-force with each other. They found this new act of sharing intoxicating and the practice swept over the colony like a tidal wave.

But as soon as the Sirens shared breath with humans Hera’s diabolical plan became evident. Humans did not have the enhanced breath holding ability or enhanced life-force the Si-Mers possessed. So when a human and Si-Mer began sharing breath the life-force she received from the human was just not enough to satisfy her, and made her wanting of more… and more. Like having sex, the sharing of breath and life-force is a passionate affair that builds to a climax… it’s when bodies weaken and collapse from the lack of oxygen that Si-Mers surrender their life-force to the other.

In short, the humans could not give what the Si-Mers were demanding in the throes of passion. For humans their life-force was literally being sucking from their bodies - as in dead! The Si-Mers seduced female humans hoping they might be different from men and satisfy this new drug they craved… human life-force; but they too succumbed during the breath exchange. The Si-Mers were bewildered at their plight but they were hooked like addicts and as the dead bodies of humans piled up on the shores of Lesbos Hera smiled at her handiwork.

That was then… this is now – 2010 A.D.

Today, Lesbos is a bustling tourist destination. Luxurious motor yachts fill the marinas of even more luxurious hotels. The island has become the playground for the ultra rich. It is also the corporate headquarters of the Daughters of Poseidon Spas International Corp. Located on the very spot favored by the original Si-Mers this super exclusive spa for women is in reality - owned, managed and staffed by… you guessed it, Si-Mers.

Despite Hera’s curse the Si-Mers not only survived but thrived and now live in small “Colonies” around the world. Using the Daughters of Poseidon Spas as a front the Si-Mers exist in secret with humans. Over the millennia some things have changed. The most important evolutionary change is today Si-Mers can almost control their addiction to sharing breath and life-force with humans. Occasional “accidents” are handled with great care to conceal the origin of the death and maintain secrecy. Second, as their numbers grew the Si-Mers had to organize their leadership. Among themselves they refer to their species as “The Family”. The corporate home in Greece is called “The Empire” and ruled by “The Elders”. Every colony has a Queen Siren, a Queen Mermaid, a High Priestess, and a Guardian who protects the colony from outside threats. The Elders rule and supervise the colonies by visiting ambassadors.

Interestingly, one evolutionary marker has not changed in 4000 years: Sirens die between 40 and 45 years old and Mermaids 35 to 40 years. Death comes from an immune deficiency like AIDS and they die of pneumonia. The younger death rate for Mermaids is the main reason they only represent 20 percent of the Si-Mer Family.

Life in the colonies revolves around the spa. Each spa is located on remote and private oceanfront property so that Mermaids can enter the spa via underwater tunnels. Hosting an ultra exclusive clientele adds to the spa’s obligation to maintain secrecy and privacy from the outside world. A very limited number of dignitaries and celebrities are allowed to join the spas so as to keep up appearances that the spa is what it is. The size of the spa reflects the size of the colony with the colonies limited to a total of 30 Si-Mers. Many spas are converted palatial sized private estates. The Daughters of Poseidon Spas has achieved fame and recognition for its research and development in hydrotherapy and water based beauty products.

Due mainly to their location, each colony has been given a specialized mission benefiting the Empire. The Key West colony has been given a special mission indeed; to find and recover the 2 billion dollars worth of sunken Spanish treasure still buried underwater off the Florida Keys.

So, there you have it - Let the Adventure Begin…

On July 20, 1950, Doctors Stephen Papp and wife, Frances, were fulfilling a dream of sailing in the Mediterranean Sea.  On this particular day they were exploring the rocky coastline of the Greek island Lesbos hoping to find a protective cove to anchor for the night. After clearing a jagged outcrop of rock Dr. Papp stood up behind the wheel and shouted,

Fran, look, its perfect!

And indeed, the rocky coast suddenly fell back into a rounded beachhead offering calm, crystalline waters. And on closer inspection Dr. Papp exclaimed,

Fran, am I dreaming or are you seeing this too?

Frances went to the bow and took in the sight. There, 1000 feet ahead were 20 beautiful, naked women. A dozen or so were swimming, the rest sunbathing on the rocks.

You’re not dreaming, said Frances dourly, adding only you can be this lucky

And then it happened. As Stephen was about to give orders to throw out the anchor he noticed a school of sharks swimming pass his port side and heading straight towards the swimmers. He didn’t even have time to warn his wife before the utter carnage and horror began. For Stephen what happened next seemed to play out in slow motion. Within seconds the water boiled with a bloody froth and screams filled the air, echoing off the cliffs. Shark fins, arms and legs flailed about as if in a death dance. And he noticed dolphin and porpoises among the swimmers which appeared to defend the swimmers against the sharks by ramming them. In disbelief he watched the women on the rocks dive into the water and joining the swimmers to kick and push off the sharks. Then, in an instant, the scene of brutality clarified. Could it be true? He would later swear that what appeared to be an indiscriminate shark feeding frenzy was far from it. The sharks were disregarding most of the swimmers and appeared to focus on a particular woman who was in the center of the attack area. The water swirled with action and blood all around her. On instinct Dr. Papp steered his boat toward that woman and yelled to his wife to fetch the gaffing pole.

500 feet. 200 feet. As the sailboat entered the battle zone more incredible scenes played out. No swimmer attempted to climb onto the boat to save herself but keep fighting off the sharks; some swimmers using only one arm because the other had been bitten off. 50 feet from the woman and floating bodies, or pieces of bodies were bumping into the boat. Forward motion would take the sailboat right into the woman so Dr. Papp left the wheel to go and help his wife fetch her from the water. Almost there, but first they reached down to pull another swimmer over the side rail. Frances screamed when just as they were pulling the woman on board a shark bit into her fishtail preventing her from being taken from the sea. Fishtail!!! The Papp’s looked at each other, mouths agape, speechless. A Mermaid?!? The woman’s screams shook them back to reality as she disappeared under the sea of blood. They were now along side the woman and for the first time she made eye contact with Stephen. “Save my baby” she screamed.

Both doctors reached down to the woman; their arms/hands meeting and grabbing each other. But like before, just as they were about to pull her onboard a huge shark clamped down on her legs tearing her away and dragging her beneath the surface. A swimmer next to her surfaced dived underwater to retrieve her… exposing her own fishtail as she pivoted and dove. Stephen and Fran could not see past the bloody surface and instinctually turned to others yelling for them to come aboard. Suddenly the water beneath them exploded as the woman surfaced again screaming in pain. Immediately the Papp’s reached down, grabbed her and screaming themselves yanked with all their might and successfully pulled her aboard. She was lighter this time because she both her legs were torn from her body. Like a scene from a Hollywood movie a shark made one last desperate leap out of the water trying to bite the woman just as she was pulled over the side rail.

Tend to her Frances

yelled Stephen as he went back to the railing to save someone else. But amazingly, within seconds, the feeding frenzy ended. The few swimmers still alive swam to the shoreline; now safe they cried out and watched the sailboat. Dr. Papp realized there was nothing more he could do so he joined his wife next to dying woman, who Stephen noted for the first time was very pregnant. One look at his wife expression and he knew she could not be saved.

Save my baby

were the final words of the woman before she died in Frances’ arms. Reading each others minds Stephen asked,

Should we?

Yes!

she exclaimed. Stephen went below, fetched his medical bag and two minutes later removed a living baby from the womb of the dead siren. It was a boy!

Not knowing exactly why, he held up the baby for the surviving swimmers on the rocks to see the baby was alive. Their reaction was to point fingers and shout and scream at each other as in disbelief or confusion. It was a puzzling reaction to the doctors who didn’t know what to do or say. Adding to their bewilderment the survivors dove underwater and disappeared.

What just happened Stephen?

demanded Frances as she collapsed on the deck clutching the baby to her chest. He joined her and with pleading, crying eyes she sobbed,

What just happened?

She broke down and began sobbing uncontrollably. Steve held her and the baby tight, unable to speak. With the sailboat drifting slowly out to sea they held on to each other without words until the sun set on the horizon.

It was dark before they spoke to each other. In hushed tones they questioned their own sanity and the reality of what they just experienced. It was the mermaid ‘both’ had seen that confirmed they were not delusional. Both had seen not just one but several. Next, the baby was breathing and crying… she was real! At first, they could not agree on what to do with the mother’s body but Stephen’s logic won Frances over. Telling the Greek Police what they just experienced was simply not an option. They would not believe in mermaids. So that left the question who was this dead woman on their boat and how did this childless couple just happen to be in the right place, at the right time, to save her from sharks. And why didn’t the women claim the child if they fought to the death to save him? Nothing made sense here.

So what to do now Stephen? she asked.

Four Months Later

As the Papp’s sailed into their home port of Key West, Florida a small group of friends were waiting on the dock to see the big surprise promised by Frances. Of course, the baby caught everyone off guard but was delighted with him.  Wine, stories and lies were shared throughout the night. Within days Stephen and Frances settled into their new life with new priorities. The baby was named Edmund after Sir Edmund Hillary, who had become the first human to reach Mount Everest.  The Baby was an obligation and a secret they accepted as an act of fate. They vowed to love and raise this child as if he was their own.

Three days after their homecoming Stephen and Frances were awakened from sleep by two Guardians who commanded them to awaken and be silent. The full moon allowed Steve to see their bedroom was filled with women dressed in white toga like garments. The Guardians, poised on each side of the bed, watched their every move. Like panthers they seemed ready to pounce if Stephen or Frances did not obey. Frances clutched her husband and sat up bringing her knees to her chin.

At the foot of the bed the woman in the middle spoke with authority.

Stephen and Frances Papp, you will tell us everything about the child.

Stephen knew immediately that their lives depended on telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. He turned to Frances and said.

We need to tell them everything sweetheart, everything.

She nodded in agreement and for the next two hours Stephen and Frances recalled the events of that day up to the present. The strangers listened intently and had many questions about the fatal shark attack. No detail was too small or inconsequential. Finally, the leader instructed Stephen and Frances to remain in bed while they held council in another room. The Guardians stood on guard at the doorway. Stephen tried to engage them in conversation but they did not respond. They were all business and Stephen knew it would be their jobs to kill him and Frances if instructed.

Almost an hour passed before the women returned. The leader spoke.

Stephen and Frances Papp, we have been observing both of you since the birth of the child and we are convinced you will keep secret that day’s events to the outside world. As you are aware, this child is special but we are at a crossroads and unsure of what action to take. What has been decided is your lives and that of the child will be spared if, and only if, you agree to keep yet another secret from the outside world. Is it agreed?

Relief and happiness filled Stephen and Frances as they agreed. And with that the Empire Queen introduced herself and her entourage. She spent much of the night enlightening the humans to the existence of the Si-Mer Empire. They were told that a Siren had not given birth to a male in 4000 years and doing so now had very special meaning. But to what end, they did not know. To many Elders in the High Council what happened on July, 20, 1950 is - the child born to the dead Siren was a son of Poseidon himself. And that Poseidon’s wife, Amphitrite, ordered the shark attack upon learning of the child. Also, it was Poseidon, himself, that brought you to the Lesbos in order to save his child.

The Empire Queen instructed the child to be left in the care of the Papps until all doubt and confusion was cleared away. It was also to be understood that the Key West colony would closely monitor the child for any signs of god-like behavior. And, should that come to pass, would force the Empire to take action. Finally, the Queen stressed the Empire existed without human knowledge because secrecy is paramount and offenders to its secrecy are immediately eliminated – is that understood? When the Papps agreed the Empire Queen introduced them to Key West Queen Siren and took them out to the boat dock and introduced them to the Key West Queen Mermaid.

Lastly, the sleeping child was brought out. Stephen bit his tongue in amusement when these powerful and strange women began fawning over a sleeping child. But, then again, could this baby really be the son of a Greek god? His eyes met Frances’ and she smiled and nodded in acknowledgement, seeming to say - it’s going to be ok Stephen. Silently, he nodded back in agreement.

Present Day – 2010

If Edmund Papp was a son of Poseidon his 60 years on earth was surely not god-like. From the beginning it was decided Edmund would not be told the details of his birth or possible birthright. Stephen and Frances raised him well, if uneventful. Edmund led an normal childhood. He was an accomplished student and loved sport. Not surprisingly he excelled in swimming. Following his parents footsteps he became a doctor. And, ironically decided to specialize in marine biology and bio-chemical engineering. He was respected by his peers and contributed to the discovery and mapping of the human gnome (DNA). He was tall, handsome and a ladies man without effort.

Ten years ago Stephen and Frances were caught in a freak storm while sailing, the boat somehow mysteriously capsized and they drowned. Their deaths affected Edmund very hard and in their memory he moved back to Key West to make the family home his own. Now a very wealthy man he converted the property into a working laboratory.

At 60 years old, Dr. Papp thought about downsizing his workload and spending more time sailing and sport diving the waters of Key West. It was time to enjoy life he told himself; but a visit by the Key West Queen Siren changed all that thinking – overnight!

In January, 2010, a healthy, 20 year old mermaid, living on the shores of the Indian Ocean suddenly took ill with breathing problems. Within a week she died of pneumonia like symptoms.  In most Si-Mer colonies, especially the smaller ones, the High Priestess is the principal care giver. The Si-Mer Empire encourages sirens to become licensed nurses and doctors and indeed the Empire has a many very capable medical professionals who travel to individual colonies when needed.

By week two another mermaid was struck down with the same symptoms and reports came in of a mermaid in Japan developing breathing problems.

By week three 10 colonies around the globe reported sick and dying mermaids. The Empire suspended all travel between colonies and set up a command center on Lesbos to deal with the epidemic.

By week 4 the Empire knew they were facing a virus type killer that was unknown, not only to the Si-Mer Empire, but to mankind. The siren doctors assumed the virus was initially spread by the ambassadors visiting the colonies throughout the Empire. And, spread within the colonies by Si-Mers exchanging breath and life-force.  Interestingly, sirens were not affected by this virus. Regardless, all breath sharing was ordered stopped and mermaids were ordered to cease all contact with sirens.

By week five ten percent of all mermaids were dead or dying with the Empire no closer to finding a cure. In fact, they hadn’t even been able to identify it and the means by which it killed. The doctors on Lesbos assumed the virus to be blood born pathogen but so far tests were inconclusive.

By week six, the epidemic infected 21 colonies before the spreading stopped. However, healthy mermaids within those colonies continued to get infected even though they were not making physical contact with each other. The elders knew the situation mandated they seek help outside the Empire. One particular person of interest was the much respected marine biologist and bio-chemical engineer Doctor Edmund Papp, of Key West, Florida. Who, according to Si-Mer historical accounts may, or may not, be a son of Poseidon, god of the oceans! The directive from Lesbos was given.

The Key West colony was unaffected by the virus but the larger Miami colony had lost 4 mermaids and 3 more were dying. Mermaid Luanna had just yesterday showed signs of infection. She was brought to Key West.

It was a Sunday afternoon when Dr. Papp returned from sailing and found the Queen Siren, High Priestess, and Guardian waiting for him on his dock. These sirens were 2nd generation apart from those Si-Mers who allowed him and his parents to live 60 years ago. And while Dr. Papp was monitored for signs of god-like powers or behavior during his life, he had frankly, fizzled in the eyes of this younger generation; almost into obscurity.

The Key West Queen was instructed by the Empire to tell him everything - from his incredible birthing to his possible birthright. He would be asked to help and not threatened in any way. Should he decide to join the fight he was to be given complete authority in all medical matters within the Key West colony. Lastly, he would be given complete access to all the known data about the virus and work with the team on Lesbos via the internet.

It took the Queen an hour to say what had to be said. As the incredible story unfolded all Dr. Papp could do was stare at these somber women. He did not know what to say or think. It was almost as if he was paralyzed. The Queen realizing his bewilderment spoke.

May I take you to the sick mermaid?

At that very instant, something happened to Dr. Papp. Very much like a sudden breeze that materializes from nowhere or a rogue wave that forms from calm seas, Dr. Papp felt extreme peace yet shared pain with these women. He felt enlightened and empowered. It was like nothing he had ever experienced before. He stood up and announced,

Sisters, bring the mermaid to me and let’s get to work, there is much to do!

The pact was done. Dr. Papp instructed the mermaid be brought into his laboratory for an examination. There was no time to waste he said. The Guardian returned momentarily with the mermaid wrapped in a foil blanket and placed her on the examination table. Dr. Papp turned from his instruments to view his very first mermaid. He was not prepared for what he saw…

Storyline

This story begins at the funeral of Guardian Merrick. She was slain defending the mermaids from bounty hunters; killers hired by a cult of super wealthy humans that know of the existence of Mermaids. They keep their knowledge of mermaids secret so they can hunt them without limits or censure. It is whispered in guarded conversation that mermaid tail soup is the most expensive food on the planet but worth every cent because it possess magical powers curing everything from cancer to impotency.

Small bands of professional bounty hunters are commissioned to search the globe and find new si-mer colonies.  And once discovered, to hunt down the mermaids. A mermaid brought back alive is said to be worth $10,000,000. However, the hunters have very strict orders not to raise awareness of their mission or make known the existence of si-mers. In fact, the ultra-rich who finance these hunting expeditions often insist a “cultural liaison” accompany the hunters to maintain the secrecy not only of the mission but to insure the secrecy of the colony they are raiding is maintained. Making the public aware of Si-mers is not in their best interest.

Until now the Key West colony was unknown to bounty hunters. This is probably due to its small numbers; currently 5 mermaids and 20 sirens. But guardian Merrick killed all three hunters and the liaison in the attack. It is not known if the liaison had opportunity to alert her employers to the existence of the Key West colony before being killed. Regardless, the Queens know it is just a matter of time before another team will be sent to investigate their disappearance.

Merrick’s funeral was a low key affair. Everyone was nervous because the secrecy of the Key West colony was in all probability – blown. Because of its remoteness on Stock Island, the Queens decided to convert the Mermaid Hunter’s waterfront studio into a religious temple. All 25 Si-mers attended. The Empire wanted to send an emissary but the Queens thought it better she not come. Merrick’s body was wrapped in linens and flowers and floated in the shallow waters of the studio’s grotto. She was surrounded by the mermaids who cried silently, often touching her with fingertips and kisses. They knew that Merrick died protecting them.

The Queens gave eulogies as did the High Priestess. A special honor was given to siren Calypso, Merrick’s apprentice. Calypso was allowed to give an account of the fight. Calypso knew all the horrific details because she was at the center of it all. The hunters were torturing Calypso for information in a shallow mangrove when Merrick, without fear, approached and engaged the 3 men in hand to hand combat. Merrick was wounded many times but not mortally as she slayed them one by one. Choking back tears Calypso said it was when she was undoing her rope bindings that the female liaison jumped out of hiding screaming and thrashing a knife wildly. The liaison was not a hunter; she was a public relations expert. Regardless, she had a knife and in her blind, clumsy attack she somehow was able to give Merrick a fatal thrust. Knowing she was going to die, Merrick clutched a shell on her necklace, chanted something in Greek, grabbed the woman by the throat and held her head under the water until her final breath bubbled to the surface. Merrick died while freeing Calypso from her bindings.

The Si-Mers cried in unison. The High Priestess approached the body and removed the shell necklace. Then she slowly bent over and mouth to mouth breathed into the lifeless body. The body was then prepared for final burial. The Mermaid Hunter started the boat and the body was brought onboard. The Queens, High Priestess and Calypso boarded as well. With the mermaids singing the boat pulled away from the dock and headed to the colony’s holy site and burial ground.

The destination was a shallow underwater plain only about a mile off Key West’s north shore. Non-descript and covered with the usual hard corals, sponges, hard rock and sea fans the site was nothing out of the ordinary. Except a hole in the earth’s crust, the size of a manhole cover appears from nowhere. And there is a gentle but constant flow of water into the hole. The inward flow is just strong enough to suck you in and never let you out. Where the water goes once it enters the hole is unknown.

This site has two main purposes. A burial site and a mermaid testing site.

The Mermaid Hunter was not allowed to anchor on holy ground so he dropped everyone off and waited in the distance. Fear of drawing attention made the ceremony short. They encircled the hole and with the High Priestess holding the body offered final prayers. The body was unwrapped from its linens and Calypso was given the high honor of being allowed to guide the body into the hole. The elders held on to each other to form a human chain so that Calypso would not be sucked in as she maneuvered Merrick’s body over the opening. She held her breath and positioned the body closer to the hole until the slow current took a hold. Calypso was suddenly overcome with emotion. She didn’t want to let go of her friend and mentor. She cried and screamed underwater in despair and love. Finally, she let Merrick go and the body slowly disappears into the blackness. Calypso just stared at the opening until the elders brought her back to the surface. She grabbed the Queen Siren for support and sobbed.

Two days pass and the decision has been made. The Queens and High Priestess agree to offer the position of Guardian to Calypso… if she will take it. With humility and resolve Calypso accepts. The Queens warn her that even though she was Merrick’s apprentice, it was only for a short while and she has much to learn. The Empire is sending an Empire Guardian to school her in future duties and combat techniques. Calypso is respectful and states she willingly awaits her new tutor and schooling. But she is taken by surprise and again humbled when she is given the shell necklace worn by Merrick. All Guardians possess one says the High Priestess. It has powers that are known only to the Guardians. Even we do not know all of its secrets. And with that said, the Queens and High Priestess, in unison bowed their heads to the new Guardian.

Meanwhile, 15,000 miles away another team of bounty hunters have been put on alert by Mr. Minteroff from Moscow, Russia. He is puzzled why Ms. Anatolf has not reported back or answered his emails. He is concerned, yet a smile of anticipation and excitement forms on his face. He intercoms his secretary and tells her to make arrangement for a team of five to travel to Key West. No wait, cancel that. Get the team assembled and get my pilot and my jet ready for takeoff tomorrow.

To be continued.

The Friendship (rough draft)

Now casting for this Story
Mermaid Swan   18/23 years old   excellent swimmer   speaking role
Siren Helena       18/23 years old   excellent swimmer   speaking role

Relationships within the Si-Mer society are, in a word, complex. Why that is, begins at birth. When a siren becomes pregnant she is relocated to Greece to raise her daughter in a communal arrangement with other mothers. The child is doted on while being taught the differences between themselves and humans and she is introduced to the ocean and schooled in perfecting her superior water skills.  The young siren is also introduced to her mermaid sisters. Mother and daughter remain together in Greece until the child reaches 8 years old. The mother is then sent home while the child remains in Greece for further schooling and evaluation. Correspondence between mother and daughter is not allowed except for emergencies. Because children say and do stupid stuff they are carefully monitored when interacting with humans. The weakest link in maintaining Empire secrecy is a child saying or doing something to ‘out’ the Empire.

Children remain in Greece, studying and defining their role within the Empire until they reach 17 years old. Afterwards, considered now an adult, she will be free to make her own decisions. Generally speaking a young siren has 3 career paths open to her 1. Furthering her education in university; 2. Preparing herself for future motherhood; 3. Selecting a colony that offers on-the-job training in a skill for which she has demonstrated an aptitude.

While in Greece children do bond and make friendships, however, they do not last beyond the Grecian environment.  When she reaches 17 the mother and child can physically reunite if they so wish but, again, most do not because independence and self-reliance are high virtues in the Si-Mer world.

There is one other choice young Sirens can make and that is - to become a mermaid. Sirens do not consider themselves human but share many human characteristics. Puberty is one of them. The desire to become a mermaid may surface at anytime in the life of a siren, however, 90% of the time it happens between the ages of 13 and 15 just after reaching puberty. The calling to become a mermaid is special, and truthfully, many Sirens cannot understand those who wish to transform themselves. Most Sirens believe mermaid life to be full of physical hardships and ends in an early death. Mermaids die before reaching 35. At present Mermaids make up only 20% of the Si-Mer Empire. When a mermaid is asked why she decided to become a mermaid she will only say she received "the calling".

A Sirens decision to become a mermaid is serious stuff and she is counseled for months to determine if her wish is sincere. A final determination by the elders will give her permission to make the transformation or not. If permission is given, her mother is notified and allowed to return to Greece to support her daughter. She will need the support because only 50% survive the transformation test and become Mermaids. And even if the transformation is successful the new mermaid is so weak and helpless in her new environment she would surely die without intervention by her new mermaid sisters and protection of Sirens.

The bond between siren and mermaid is a very complex relationship that defies explanation and reason. Their feelings towards each other, whether love or anger, perplexes even themselves. It is almost mystical, as if they have no control over behavior and thought when they interact and socialize.

15th century High Priestess Dionysia, a philosopher and seer, is credited for offering the best explanation. She said the gods on Mount Olympus made Sirens to be calculating, cold of heart, and violent natured so that they could not only survive in a world ruled by humans but create chaos and destruction on earth. To the gods, she explained, earth was a chessboard and humans and Sirens were merely pawns to be moved about as in a game. But Poseidon took pity on the Sirens and in his wisdom created Mermaids; bestowing in them harmony, love and laughter which counter balanced the siren’s evil and violent character flaws. Then he instilled in Sirens the compulsion to act as protectors and givers of succor to Mermaids, who without the intervention of Sirens would perish.

In short, High Priestess Dionysia said both siren and mermaid need each other to complete the other as living entities. Through the exchange of breath and life force Mermaids pass on to Sirens a measure of compassion and love. Subsequently, Sirens provide Mermaids not only safety and protection but a raison d’être; which they appear to need for their mental health and well being. Without Sirens, mermaids seem lost, disoriented and despondent.

Mermaid/Siren - a true symbiotic relationship if ever there was one.

In 2010, Mermaid Swan reunited with her childhood friend Siren Helena in the colony of Key West, Florida. Their shared adventure in Key West would become stuff of legend; their story retold by the Elders for generations to come.

It all started…. To be continued.

 The Indigo Pearls (rough draft)

Now casting for this Story
Mermaid Mila    18/25     Excellent swimmer       Speaking role

The Bank of London holds one of the world’s most secret treasures; they are called, The Indigo Pearls. Only three are known to exist; Large, flawless and deep indigo in color. Their documented history is brief - the last owner of the pearls was Adolf Hitler. The last holder of the pearls was Goering when captured by Allied Forces in France. The pearls have been examined by experts and valued at priceless. Officially they are part of the Royal Crown Jewels collection but they are kept from public view for reasons labeled “state secrets”.

In Lesbos the Empire’s treasury holds 35 indigo pearls. Like humans, Si-Mers also value the pearls and hunt them in all oceans. But so far all discoveries of the pearls have been accidental and not from organized hunts. The pearls are rare because the special oysters that produce them can only be found in small, underwater caves and cave tunnels having absolutely no light. And, the cave must have a current that feeds the oysters a very special nutrient which produces the special indigo color. The pearls have been found in both deep and shallow water caves and mermaids have drowned trying to retrieve them from the cave tunnels. While still in school all Si-Mers are shown the pearls and the special oysters that make them. To date no indigo pearls have been found in Caribbean waters.

That was about to change.

Mermaid Mila was swimming just above an inshore reef looking for a lobster lunch when she noticed an indigo colored oyster shell. Her mind raced as it tried to visualize childhood memories of the day she actually touched the indigo pearls and shells. She picked it up and immediately she knew this was indeed an indigo oyster shell. “Praise Poseidon”, she kept yelling underwater. She surfaced to look at it in the bright sunlight. Her hand began to shake out of excitement, could she really have found an indigo pearl. But wait a minute, this was just the shell, where’s the pearl. She took a breath and returned to the coral and sponge covered ledge. She searched the shallow reef thoroughly and was beginning to panic that she might not find the pearl when she noticed an octopus emerging from a concealed hole in the ledge. Closer investigation revealed a fissure in the limestone rock. Mila stuck her hand in the crevice and pulled on some rock; the porous limestone easily crumbled away revealing a bigger, dark hole. And, she noticed there was a gentle outflow current of cold water. OMG, she thought this is the mouth of a tunnel cave; the pearl is inside this cave. OMG, maybe it’s a bed of pearls! Mila needed air and surfaced; her thoughts buzzing with excitement and anticipation.

A boat was passing by so she took a breath and sank to the ledge. With time now to collect her thoughts Mila went from excited and happy to confused and anxious. She remembered being told that mermaids had drowned trying to retrieve the pearls in pitch black cave tunnels that were hundreds of feet long. Could this tunnel be like that? She stared at the small opening she had made. Gathering courage she moved in close, putting her face right up to the hole and peered into the black. Nothing but cool clear water hit her eyes. She tasted the water but found it pure. She was about to stick her arm into the hole but got scared at the last moment and pulled it away. What to do, what to do, what to do??? She listened for the boat that had passed. It was safe now so she surfaced. Dizzy with mixed and jumbled feelings that switched from elation to fearful, the young mermaid knew telling the Queen Mermaid about the shell would bring her status and honor in the colony. But Mila also realized this discovery offered her the opportunity to overcome her personal demons of always being afraid in life; Afraid to make decisions; Afraid to make choices. Always afraid of the consequences and problems her actions and decisions could create. Mila hated her lack of self-assurance and hid her failing well from the colony. But now, staring at the black hole, Mila did not think about the honor and status collecting an indigo pearl would bring to her, her thoughts were images of her stuck and drowning in a black, narrow, underwater tunnel and her lungs burning for air. She started to cry underwater. Pushing away the thoughts and images of being trapped underwater she closed her eyes and shouted… I can do this! I must do this!

The Addict (rough draft)

Siren Rona   18/25   Excellent swimmer  Speaking role
Human Justin   25ish    speaking role
Human male victim   25ish

Siren Rona never recovered from the sudden and violent death of her friend mermaid Anouk. The teenager, once filled with life withdrew from the outreach of those who cared and now functioned zombie-like throughout the day. Nighttime behavior was especially troubling to the Elders because Rona would leave the compound every evening and return in the early hours of the morning. The Elders discussed several plans of action but decided to just wait and see if time would heal her distress. It was a decision they would soon regret.

Tonight, like last night, and the night before, Rona walked aimlessly up and down Duval Street. But the live music, bustling, crowded sidewalks and window displays did not energize her as it would a normal teenager. On the contrary she seemed to shrink and shield herself from the vibrant life all around her. Justin, a street-wise drug dealer picked up on her vibe immediately and marked her for his own. The seduction was quick and almost effortless. Within hours Justin had Rona on PCP to relieve her grief and suffering. It took Justin three days to take what little money Rona had. On the fourth, he took her body in return. On the fifth day Justin’s body was found in an abandoned property in Bahama Village. An autopsy would later find no obvious cause of death.

Two days later another drug dealer was found dead in Mallory Square with, again, no apparent cause of death. Mayor Stevenson and Police commissioner Reilly announced to the press that the city had assigned a task force to determine if there was a connection between the two. Detective Matt Hobson would lead the investigation.

Hobson was present at the autopsy of the second victim and made the prophetic remark.

He looks pale and withered almost like the life was sucked out of him.

The coroner agreed shaking his head,

yea, very strange indeed.

Under the influence of drugs Rona could not control her sharing of breath and life-force with humans. Humans simply can not survive the physical demands Si-Mers need to consummate the breath sharing experience Ultimately the encounter ends with the usual fatal results - a dead human. And now fully addicted, no human was safe in Key West.

Goddess Aphrodite   25/30   delicate features
Human Girl Rachel   18/25   excellent swimmer
The Mermaid Hunter   50/60   good shape/handsome   scuba certified

Ah, Poseidon there you are, I’ve been searching all the oceans for you.

Aphrodite, my favorite. What brings you to me?

I have a favor to ask of you. I have taken an interest in a human girl that wishes to become a mermaid, and I want it to be so. She prays to you every night - why have you not heard her prayers? You so indifferent to humans; it’s not right.

Baaa! Humans act so foolishly, always getting into trouble and than pleading for mercy or there’re wanting of something. Humans are so boring and tiring.

But this young girl is different mighty Poseidon. She praises and glorifies you as much as she asks for help.

Really! Hmm Mermaid you say? I haven’t made a mermaid in 4000 years. Hmm, What would the other mermaids say? Or worst yet, the sirens. You know how foul tempered they can be! I don’t think they would accept this human. But then again, it might be fun to watch this little drama play out. Aphrodite, I give you permission to intercede and make her wish come true. BUT… she must prove herself and earn this gift. I don’t want you making it too easy for her.

I know how special mermaids are to your heart so I will enlist the help of your son to make it so.

WHAT! You believe that lie. I tell you he is not….

Mighty Poseidon, everyone on Mount Olympus knows this human, born to a Siren is your son. And shame on you for abandoning him. Ignore me if you want but this only strengthens my play. Since, as you say, he is not your son than you can not have objection for me using him in my master plan.

Do as you wish Aphrodite, just remember, you have my interest in this now and I will be watching.

                                      _______________________________

Rachel’s feet hurt. She looked at the wall clock and sighed, ten more minutes till shift change. Thank God, what a horrible day; a 10 hour shift and only 50 dollars in tips to show for it.

Joe, the manager, asked if her side work was done. It was, so he let Jan leave.

It’s February in NYC and the freezing air chilled her to the bone as she bicycled to her apartment. She chained her bike to a tree and cursed as she read that the high rise elevator was not working again. With a heavy sigh she slowly made her way up the urine soaked stairway. She was only 18 and in good health but her legs and feet still ached when she opened the door to apartment 523.

Once inside her small studio apartment the ugliness of the day began to melt away. As in a trance she did her routine of lighting candles, putting on music, filling the bathtub with hot water and changing into sweats and a tee. Then Rachel booted up her computer to check for emails. As the computer whirred and came to life she glanced at her newest acquisition; a delicate porcelain mermaid with a dolphin. It had cost almost a weeks pay but she could not resist. It was the best piece in her large collection of mermaid collectables. Jan’s apartment was full of mermaid ‘stuff’.

The computer booted up and her desktop image appeared; it was the famous Greek mythology painting titled: Ulysses and the Sirens by Herbert Draper. She touched the image on the screen saying, “Poseidon, god of all the oceans and seas, make me a mermaid, please”. Her mailbox was empty so she began to click on her favorite websites searching for updated mermaid stories, photos and videos.

Rachel’s mother would say her daughter’s obsession with mermaids began in the womb. She told stories of when still an infant Rachel used to dunk herself underwater while being bathed in the sink. What baby does that?!? She would exclaim. And later Rachel was always the first into the swimming pool and the last to get out. Of course she excelled on the high school swim team but had to give up a college swim scholarship due to a stupid, stupid night out with the boys who, without her knowledge, robbed a convenience store and got caught. Rachel was charged as an accomplice and her life changed, for the worse, forever. Now she only wanted out; Out of New York City; Out of her dead end job; Out of her circle of loser friends.

Rachel suddenly remembered the tub filling with water and hurried to the bathroom to shut off the taps. She lit some more candles by the tub and fetched 3 restaurant salt shakers from her bag. She poured the salt into the water, took off her clothes and settled into the tub. The hot water enveloped her body and soaked away her fatigue and depression. For minutes Rachel didn’t move and allowed the warm water do its job. Almost in a catatonic state Rachel held her breath and submerged laying face up on the bottom of the tub.

As she lay there underwater Rachel began dreaming of swimming over coral reefs as a mermaid. Her mind, now fully transported to the ocean floor, hovered over waving sea fans and brightly colored sponges. Smiling in the tub, and on her imaginary reef, she said hello to all the fish. Turning upside down as she searched under a coral head for lobsters and crabs. Next, she felt the sponges and sea fans and dug her hands into the sand bottom. She looked up, blew bubbles and watched as they raced to the surface .Rachel was home and loving it.

The need for air brought Jan to the surface but after a quick gulp she was back on the reef again. Suddenly a bright light appeared from the ocean’s surface and slowly descended to her. This was not part of Jan’s imagination so she opened her eyes underwater to make it stop but the bright light was in the bathroom too. Confused and afraid to surface in the tub she observed the light as it transformed into flowing robes and a female form. The blinding light dimmed to reveal a beautiful woman floating immediately above her. Rachel was not afraid of the apparition, or confused anymore; indeed, she found herself calm and at peace with this event. The woman hovered to within touching distance and floated just above Rachel. Rachel thought she was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen.

Hello Rachel. Do not be afraid gentle one. I am the Goddess Aphrodite and I have been watching you.

Am I dreaming? Are you for real? Am I dead?

Oh no, my precious, you are quite alive. (Aphrodite reaches down and touches Rachel's cheek) Do you feel that?

Yes. You are so beautiful. I want to cry.

I have a special gift for you Rachel. I have spoken to mighty Poseidon about you Rachel, and we know of your wish to become a mermaid. Do you still wish to become a mermaid?

More than anything! Poseidon knows about me???

Yes, and he has allowed me to help you become a mermaid so this is what I want you to do.

When Aphrodite finishes giving instructions she slowly bends and gives Rachel a soft kiss. The apparition dims to nothing and is gone

Still underwater in her bathtub, Rachel blinks her eyes and surfaces. And wow! The bath water has turned ice cold. Jan jumps out touching the water to be certain. It’s very cold and confusion sets in. She grabs a towel, pats herself dry, jumps into bed and curls into a fetal position. She lay there motionless, eyes closed questioning her sanity. I’m not crazy she tells herself. I’m not. She peeks out from the covers and spots a photo of Poseidon hanging on her wall. Please tell me I’m not going crazy, she pleads to herself. Without appearing or sound Aphrodite answers her.

Rachel, I will wait for you under the sea in Key West.

I love you Aphrodite.

And with that Rachel fell asleep with a smile on her face. The next morning brought no confusion or questions of what to do. Rachel actions had purpose and resolve. She apologized to her boss for her sudden departure but she just had to leave the city. She used next month’s rent money to purchase a Greyhound bus ticket to Key West, Florida. Most of the day, however, was spent transporting all of her mermaid collectables to her sister’s place in the Bronx. She didn’t tell her sister about the vision or the purpose for her trip. She also didn’t tell her mom as she gave her a tearful hug goodbye. She was leaving tomorrow morning. She would write. She would call. She would be alright. Don’t worry.

The bus, with Rachel on it, left the Port Authority Terminal at 6:45 am. It was snowing again. The two day trip gave time for Rachel to ask herself a million questions and imagine a million different scenarios of what would happen when she arrived in Key West. And then it hit her! Me… a mermaid! What have I done?

It was all too much and she started to cry silently so as not to draw attention from fellow passengers. She tried to contact Aphrodite but the Goddess did not respond. Well, I’ll just see it through she thought to herself. I’ll get a job in Key West if all this is some kind of hallucination.

Rachel’s spirits lifted immediately when she spotted her first palm tree. OMG, she thought, Key West, the southernmost city in America. She laid her head down and started to imagine what Key West might look like, and promptly fell asleep.

The bus’ sudden turn into the Key West airport awakened Rachel from sleep. It was midnight and there was not much to see except parking lots and waiting taxis. Rachel exited the bus and for a moment didn’t know what to do or where to go. But then she remembered her instructions; contact a man in Key West called ‘Mermaid Hunter”. He would know what to do. Even though it was late Jan thought she had no option but to seek out the Mermaid Hunter. She went to the line of waiting cabbies asking if they knew of a “Mermaid Hunter” in town. She got lucky; the last one told her a boat named “Mermaid Hunter” belonged to a local Doctor named Ed Papp. A quick call to the station gave an address and she hired the cabbie to take her to his address on Stock Island. Within 5 minutes the cabbie dropped her off at a very non-descript wooden fenced home. Chickens and barking dogs could be heard everywhere. Bewildered and tired she didn’t care about the late hour and knocked on the gate. A light came on and Doctor Papp opened the gate.

Yes

Hi. I’m very sorry for bothering you so late at night but I just got into town and was told... are you known as the Mermaid Hunter?

That seems to be my name around town. What can I do for you?

Oh, thank god. (The stress of the last two days took its toll and Rachel started to cry) I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry for this. I don’t know how to say this but I was told you would help me. My name is Rachel. Do you know of me or has anyone spoke to you about me?

No, I’m sorry. I do not understand any of this. What should I know about you?

Rachel did not eat during the entire two day bus trip and Dr. Papp’s rebuff of sorts was too much for her mind to comprehend; her knees weakened and she almost fainted. Dr. Papp quickly supported her as she gained her bearings.

I’m truly sorry, Dr. Papp, I was told you could help me.

Then Rachel collapsed into Dr. Papp’s arms. She awoke lying on his couch covered with a blanket. Apologizing again she sat up to face the doctor who was seated next to her.

I have some hot tea brewing and I want you to eat something ok? What is your name again?

Ok. Thank you. I’m Rachel

It’s good to meet you Rachel. If you feel strong enough to talk why don’t you tell me what’s goin’on?

I was told…

No, stop right there. Start from the beginning Rachel. Who told you?  Give me the what, where, and why? OK?

Ok. Three days ago…

…. To be continued.

The Si-Mer Empire functions in secrecy under a corporate umbrella named, The Daughter’s of Poseidon Spas International (DOP). From the beginning, Sirens have proved themselves to be exceptional business women and the DOP corporation has received international recognition for its business acumen and its product; namely the spa experience itself. The corporation also produces its own line of beauty products which also earns accolades and awards. The Elders, hold corporate titles and rule from the DOP headquarters in Lesbos, Greece. Having to balance world-wide media coverage while maintaining secrecy is a challenge the Si-Mers did not want but it came with success. In fact, one of the biggest threats to the Si-Mer society today is the paparazzi photographing the spa’s rich and famous clientele and by chance filming a mermaid. The spas cater only to women and membership in the Daughter’s of Poseidon Spas Network is very hard to obtain, making it very exclusive… almost to the point of reclusive. Membership selection is one duty of the Elders in Lesbos.

To date there are 78 DOP spas around the world; and while each spa is a legitimate business, it fronts a colony’s secret mission as decreed by the Empire. For example, the colony in Palermo, Italy is responsible for the research and development of a promising shark repellent. The spa in Darwin, Australia is hydro-farming and testing a very rare marine plant that, when ingested, immediately produces oxygen into the bloodstream allowing Si-Mers to dive deeper and stay underwater longer.

When on assignment, those Si-Mers having special training or expertise go to spas as paying customers. However, if their work mandates an extended visit she will not come as guest but an employee of the Spa, and thereby not raise eyebrows when seen often in the community.

The mission for the Key West, Florida spa is to discover sunken Spanish treasure, collect it, inventory it, and then hide the treasure until it can be transported to Greece. Most of the work is done by Sirens posing as Spa clientele who appear to rent the Spa’s diving and snorkel boats, The Mermaid Hunter I and II. Mermaid Hunter II is a 54’ cabin cruiser that stays at sea for several days. Some mermaids, like sirens, also develop special talents and expertise and they too travel worldwide to the spas that need their expertise. Due to their special underwater skills mermaids are the primary treasure hunters in Key West.

The Key West colony is most active after hurricanes strike the Florida Keys because these powerful storms literally reshape the ocean floor by shifting mega tons of sand from one location to another. Treasure hidden for centuries before the storm might be exposed after the storm. Unlike the famous Key West treasure hunter Mel Fisher who used heavy machinery to excavate tons of sand and sediment to reach the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, the Key West Si-Mers constantly monitor the ocean floor for new exposed treasure after Poseidon has done the heavy lifting.

At present the Key West colony has 26 permanent Si-Mers; 20 sirens and 6 mermaids. A visiting team of two mermaids and two sirens have been assigned to repair the underwater tunnel used by mermaids to access the spa’s pools and grottoes. Mission activity in Key West is slow because the Keys have been spared major hurricane force winds for several years now and most of the ocean bottom has already been systematically examined for new treasure – without much success. Life has become lazy and boring in Key West. The only source of excitement is next week’s arrival of super celebrity Beyonce’ Knowles who is scheduled for a 3 day stay at the spa.

But, super paparazzo, Glenn Hurt is already in town getting Scuba lessons because after surveying the spa grounds from the air he decided the only way to get the photos he needed was entering the property from the ocean. His next move was to rent a boat and get an underwater housing for his camera.
